Delhi’s Unique Wastewater Treatment Plant By 2021

Wastewater Treatment Plant manufacturers in India will be well-versed with Singapore’s unique solution towards wastewater management with NEWater. It is said to be a potable sewage treatment plant which will increase the existing water supply by a fifth.

Our country’s capital Delhi might also witness such similar solutions by 2021. The Delhi Jal Board is planning to reuse water. They are preparing to launch the water from the sewage treatment plant into the Yamuna river, at the point where it enters the city. Water from the Yamuna river, when entering the city, will be lifted and moved to a treatment plant, that will furthermore treat the water, according to the Jal Board plans. This water will then be supplied to all the Delhiites. To curb the mental block of drinking sewage water, they are mixing the water with river Yamuna, which in turn will also help to maintain the ecological flow of the river, thus maintaining the volume of water.

In mid-July, the NITI Aayog had released a report cautioning about 21 cities in our country to run out of groundwater by the year 2020. This can affect almost 100 million people. Delhi is among these cities. Thus, taking a decision to develop a unique wastewater treatment plant is surely on spot.

At present, Delhi is producing water, for roughly about 3.5 billion litres which are about 916 million gallons per day (MGD). Form these, around 80 million gallons per day are sucked from groundwater. The rest is pumped from the rivers Ganga and Yamuna. The water taken from these sources is later treated and supplied to the residents and consumers. With the new wastewater treatment plant in design, the Jal Board of Delhi plans to increase the clean water output more by 200 MGD till 2021. This can help the Delhi government to meet the city’s current demand of 1100 MGD.

There are many experts who have welcomed this proposal but are sceptic about the water that is to be released in the Yamuna, as the water planned to be released is treated and thus adding to the Yamuna will only get the water back to square one.

We agree on the scepticism as the treated water will again be mixed with the pollutants of the Yamuna water, scraping all the efforts. Instead, the Jal Board of Delhi should try to release the once treated water from the sewage treatment plant, directly into the wastewater treatment plant of Delhi.

Also, before starting the plant, the Jal Board should:

  • Ensure the sewage treatment plants’ functioning
  • Use the treated water for the non-drinking purpose
  • Develop the river’s own ecological flow

At present, the treated water is used in gardens and water parks and hopes to implement on a larger scale. Delhi is also hoping for help from Uttar Pradesh for about 150 MGD of water. The Delhi government is planning to install pipelines for the same. The Delhi government also hopes to strengthen the ties with Uttar Pradesh and reduce its dependency on Haryana, with whom they are having a legal battle over water sharing.
