How to Maintain a Wastewater Treatment Plant?

Home Blog How to Maintain a Wastewater Treatment Plant?

To ensure your wastewater treatment plant functions efficiently, you must provide periodic maintenance and inspect your system from time to time. Any lapse or failure to do so may lead to irreparable damages in the pipeline and even permanent loss of certain parts.

Maintaining a sewage treatment plant is not tough. You have to be regular with inspection. Upon witnessing a fault or damage in the system, you must act on the issue immediately to save the plant from irreparable damage. There are an array of factors responsible for the smooth functioning of a sewage treatment plant. Let us guide you to the easy and effective methods to maintain your wastewater treatment plant.

Wastewater Treatment Plant

  1. While doing daily rounds, ensure that the system’s pressure is within limits and not exceeding the subscribed range.
  2. Inspect the airlift return to ensure the wastewater treatment plant is working correctly. You can check the flow via the clear plastic pipe laid on the installation. You will witness a clear sludge flowing through the tubes to the aeration chamber. It shows that your system is working correctly.
  3. To ensure the enhanced efficiency of your plant, a bio-pac is installed every week on the system. The bio-pac has aerobic bacteria, activated when placed in hot water.
  4. Over time, the sludge accumulation in the aeration tank results in sewage increase. This sludge accumulation or suspended dirt particle is measured in mg/litre. You are then required to take a sample of the sludge in a conical flask given by the manufacturer and fill the flask up to the 1000ml mark. The sludge sample collected is then allowed to sit in the flask, and then the reading of sludge content is checked.
  5. Along with checking the sludge content, you must inspect the level of biological oxygen demand (BOD). You must ensure that the BOD is not above 50 mg/litre. The BOD sample is assessed by incubating it at 20 degrees and properly oxygenating it. The quantity of oxygen absorbed by the sample over five days is observed. This process is to inspect whether the aerobic bacteria successfully free required oxygen for a full breakdown of sewage water.
  6. It is not just the sludge and oxygen saturation you must inspect, ensure that your system’s internal coating is free from cracking and blistering. If you witness any damage in the pipes, get the tanks emptied immediately and call for maintenance to get the necessary repairs done timely. Ensure all the required precautions are taken while cleaning the tank as the tank may contain toxic gases. You can use a draeger tube to check the gases. A draeger tube is a tube where samples of various gases are collected before entering the tank.
  7. If your sewage treatment plant is installed with a UV disinfection system, don’t forget to change the UV lamp as recommended by your manufacturer.
  8. A wastewater treatment plant has high and low level-limit switches to cut-in and cut-out discharge to the overboard pipe. Ensure these switches are in good working condition at all times.
  9. When the sewage treatment plant is running, ensure your stand-by sewage water discharge pump is kept on auto.
  10. If you incur a blockage in any sewage or pipeline, you can always use a connection meant for back flushing. This method is used to unclog your sewage pipelines. However, before you operate the back flushing technique, have a word with your manufacturer to avoid making mistakes. It will be best if you summon help to unclog the sewage pipe for you if you are a novice at this.

Ideally, sewage pipe cleaners are instructed to use tested chemicals provided by an expert so that no clogging of lines occurs. However, ensure that there is no overuse of said chemicals as it may lead to killing aerobic bacteria. If the aerobic bacteria is harmed, it may result in a decrease in oxygen concentration in water which in turn will hamper the purifying process.
